I think there's seven shades of white, black & gray, shades being the key word.
Grey is a hard one. There must be a noticeable difference in each shade.
A light, medium, and dark would better illustrate this.
Then one could add to each side of the medium.
Like say a medium light and medium dark.
I would suggest either 3 or 5 in a series of grays.
Too many and they begin to look too alike.
Remember your artistic eye is trained to better recognize subtle differences in shades others may not see as easily.
