Draw brightness?

Is it possible to set a brush or a pencil so that when you draw with them the pixels change brightness rather than apply a specific colour? It would just be useful sometimes to be able to 'draw' a shadow (for example) by darkening the pixels around an edge.

When I place text on an icon I can't seem to get it to anti-alias. I've tried different fonts but I always get 'jaggies' whether I have the No-smoothing or Smoothing buttons selected. Am I doing it wrong or doesn't text anti-alias?

How can I make large cursors? Hey guys, I'd like to know how to make a big cursor (bigger than 32 x 32). I tried setting the cursor size to a bigger size (64 x 64) but it just resizes it to 32 x 32. Is it actually possible or what? Thanks for your help.
