You will need to download a patch that allows to export in 3D Studio format for Proteus/Ares from here: 3DStudioExport.zip.
Here is how to install the patch:
- Go to the application installation folder and backup RWIconEditor.exe and RWDocument3DStudio.dll.
- Then replace them with the modified versions from the downloaded .zip.
- Start the application and open any .u3d file.
- Drag and drop the 3DSExport.rwcommand file to the first toolbar (the one with new, open, save, ... commands). A new icon should appear in the toolbar.
- When you click then new icon, a dialog appears and you may select
the level of detail for surface triangulation before saving.

I tried to follow Vlasta's advice but it was success only one time, all other attempts ended in application hangup.
What can be a reason of such trouble?
Do I have to perform such procedure each time I want to convert design to 3DS or the new toolbar icon will stays permanent after first attempt?

You should not need to repeat the whole procedure again as long as the updated configuration (with the new commands in toolbar) is saved. If the application crashed or if you have terminated it, then it was not saved and you'll need to add the button again.
It is hard to guess why it only worked once. Can you do a couple of tests with simple 3D models or by only exporting one model per session? Maybe a pattern will emerge...
