Ooh, you think you can block me from gettin those two cursors?
How about I FORCE my way through with recorded footage AND cursor resize?!
*Ahem* The two cursors from the game Republic-The revolution, & edits thereof.
So...
back in 1998, a developer thought
he'd leave & open up a studio of his own, "Elixir",
to have a jab at a couple ideas of his.
Enter Republic:The revolution, a RTS title revolving about political power.
Between 1991 & 1993, a certain "union of free republics"
had collapsed into a handful of different jurisdictions,
& this game places us in a fictitious breakaway state from such union,
"Novistrana", whose name translates as "New Country"
(still a better ethymology than "Brunei", aka "over there"),
& whose headlines read witty things such as
"ДЩЧЦѪФḰДḰ ФЦПЙѪ", aka
DShchChTsĄFKjDKj FTsPĬĄ...
oh wait, maybe it's more like Croatian&Serbian!
Then it'd be "Döshchöchötsąfökjödkjö fötspĭą".
The game opens up with a quote from Tolstoy,
"The strongest of warriors are these two - time & patience".
We see a youngling(that's us), getting beaten up
as he witnesses the kidnapping of his parents by intelligence agents led by Vasily Karasov.
We're shown the same cretin rising to power as president of IfüʕdztyadId, & running amok with oppression.
We're then shown the youngling once more, as a grown up, & get to play in his shoes as he puts together a grassroots political movement, hell-bent on avenging his close ones & the rest of the regime's victims.
Such charming premise, models, textures, & soundtrack should make for a treat, & make up for the jarring
eldritch cyrillic horrors, one might think...
well, thing is, this thing has one of
the worst gameplay experiences one could
possibly concoct, it's as if the developers
made it excruciating on purpose!
No wonder it flopped so hard back in the day.
Funnily enough, I've read this anectode,
that at the E3 fair
the lead dev was elusive when at least
one journalist inquired on the gameplay,
expecting him to focus on the trees instead.
You're probably better off playing
a Win9x copy of Freecell, which is
why I decided edit ourselves a nice
alt.selection pointer.
The studio would go on to release
an other game, "Evil Genius",
the next year(2004), with
decent reception...
however, it wasn't enough
for the perceived high-risk
given by this disaster, & thus
Elixir studio orderly closed in 2005,
with just enough to pay its liquidated staff.
