you also do not have legal right to place the images into the public domain..

We understand and we all love the images. They make the website more fun and entertaining. I am sure there is no problem with you keeping the set for your own private use so you can keep on loving them on your own computer.
It is always best to use images you create yourself, but if you simply must use someone else's work it would be better to obtain their permission first and not to put them in the public domain unless they agree to that license designation.
