I work for a dildo boss who knows nothing about computers, refuses to pay a tech to come out, and expects me to be (poof!) an expert without training. Now he's ragging on me to know the difference between icons (images?) in our Network Places folder. I keep telling him I know nothing, but he ignores me -- it's all about the mighty dollar. He's claiming that a bunch of icons have shown up in "My Network Places" since I came to work here back in June. I keep telling him that I'm not deleting anything because he'll accuse me of screwing up the computer, but he won't listen. Can anyone direct me to a site where I can learn something to the effect of my responsibilities as the network administrator? I'd very much appreciate any help. Thanks,

Perhaps he is wondering if you know what those icons in that folder represent. Icons, in general, represent programs, or files, or any "object" on the computer. It can represent a location on the internet as URL/internet address. Icons are just symbols for computer objects. What they represent is either basic information and/or it may take a program or application on the computer to open it. as in a text (.txt) file is opened with notepad. The icon represents that text and is a file on the hard drive. The computer opens notepad, goes to that file on the drive and renders it in a readable format in the window.

How can you be over complicating what an icon is. The icon is just 'the picture' that is being displayed on the file you have i any given folder (And indeed the folder picture itself)

If something new is in there then it is a 'folder', 'file' or 'shortcut'(be it URL address or other file path pointer)

The description which is listed above is very detailed and a helpful description - even to myself - for how windows uses, or people can make icons, but the 'icon' is just a picture. it does nothing else. What ever it is sitting on your bosses computer is one of the 3 stated objects above.

If new "icons" are showing up under your bosses "Network Places" folder then that indicates he has gone to a network resource (ie - shared network folder) and Windows is saving that as history so he can easily get back to that location. You can also set these up manually as bookmarks if you like.

I wish there was a more in-depth document about Windows icons, I've looked all over and haven't found much.
I'm making a .ico reader in PHP that will support up to 32-bit (true colour + alpha) icons of any manipulated size, I know there are libraries out there but they're not commented, and all have some kind of limitation on them about what icons it can and can't read.
From the seems of it, 1 through to 24 bits per pixel use a simple 1-bit mask for transparency/invert, and 32-bit icons use an 8bit/pixel mask for opacity.
I'm thinking about writing some documentation on it from what I've had to find out from trial and error.

Can I put something inside folder or glass with RealWorld Icon Editor? Like those Windows Icons are made. 😴 Or do I have to do it different steps?

Yes, use the "Icon from application" wizard to extract the front and back halves of the folder icon from shell32.dll, save the front side into a separate .ico file. Then paint something over the back size of the folder and put the front side of the folder on top of that (by for example dragging and dropping the saved .ico on the list of images inside an icon.

I just finished a book called the "The Teacher's Alphabet"the website is www.theteachersalphabet.com. It's a new way to teach kids how to print their ABC's using five lines, instead of three-(for starting and ending the curved letters) and a new teaching order based on how the letters are shaped (directional groups). 😎
Anyway how do I load new fonts into Real World Paint????? 😞

Hey peoples, Windows icons are saved in .dll's these are libraries of thousands of .ico icons.

make a copy of the .dll library you want. These are usually found in C:\Windows\System32

Make a folder somewhere where you want to work. paste the dll in the folder and rename it to .zip. That's right it is essentially a zip file full of .ico files. When I mean full i mean thousands! All of various sizes and shapes.

If you want to rasterize one first or use direct or indirect with rocket dock you can open the .ico in GIMP and save it as a .PNG but in the case of this tutorial posted online I think most of you will want to go the other way from .png to .ico 😉

However if you want to save an icon from somewhere and you cannot right click 'save as' or what ever, you can do a nasty thing like take a screen shot (print screen) and then crop it in paint, save as PNG, then open in GIMP and then select by colour or select by fuzzy-select and then remove certain attributes or (junk you don't want) and then clean it up and save it as either a .ico file or .PNG?

As my father would say 'Son there's many ways to skin a cat' 😉 (nb. To all now offended 'cat-lovers' usage in the line above is communicated as a metaphor and has no direct relation to what is actually said)

There is no special folder, the icons are in various .dll files, most of them in shell32.dll
