a) it's good that ms is using png because that increases the popularity of that open-source project. would you rather microsoft reinvent the technology except in a proprietary format? b) how is it not a 'feature'? it wasn't present in previous versions of windows and now it is... what would make you happy? to not mention it at all and silently change the icon format?

Now how do you actually compile these into a program? Visual Studio (including 2005) complains icons with an embedded PNG image aren't valid.

No games on Linux. I don't know where you have been. But must not have been where I was. Nexuiz own's on Linux. Slowly on Windows XP. Same with a few other games. Nexuiz needs all the ram it can get is hands on. Windows uses to much.

SVG icons work. Png Icons. Is it me or is MS 4 years behind linux at this point. Linux was working on getter rid of the Pixel based Icons for that long.

Every OS has it advantages and disadvantages. Windows is very easy to use and to install. Adding devices like printers, scanners, graphics cards etc is also easy. Suffers from security holes. I have installed Linux on my pc now, and think it's much better than Win. Win costs a lot of money, Linux is free. Everyone can get the sourcecode, everyone who wants is able to find out, how Linux works. That's why, there aren't big problems/errors with drivers and so on. But it is difficult to use for those, who aren't good at computers. I have been needing lots of time, to learn how to use and configure Linux. But now it seems easy to me. Wait two/three years and Linux is the number one, i'm sure!

Windows is popular because most computer users are lemmings. They use what everyone else uses and never bother to see just what OS X might have to offer. Will they prefer it? Maybe. Will they prefer Windows? Maybe. But who's gonna know if they never try something different?

"Linux" is easy if ya use the right Linux... Ubuntu. I set my father-in-law up with it and he's totally clueless about computers, but he has no complaints about Ubuntu. He's quite happy about it and I rarely ever get questions from him.

XP chokes on 256x256 icons. If that size icon is available in the set, the set will only work with Vista.

BUT - If you create a 255x255 icon (and delete the 256x256), XP will scale it and use it.;0)

I have changed a bunch of icons to a set containing 32-bit, 128x128 and 255x255 icons. The visible difference between these icons and the standard smaller icons is VERY noticeable and, imho, worth the time and effort.

Note that XP uses the smallest available icon in *any* multi-icon file for display, thus the trimming of other sizes.

Ditto for the color depth. I haven't had a system that could only support <=256-color depth for years! Why keep all of the low-res, small icons when Windows does such an admirable job using the larger sizes?

Yes, XP cannot use the 256x256 format, but it should safely ignore it. There is actually only one byte for dimension specification in the .ico format, hence it appears as 0x0 pixels to XP.

The low-color formats could be useful for example in safe mode. Or if the application in question should also run on Windows 2000 or earlier.

When i saved my icon to my desktop, it was saved as a .rcu file. I can't open it. Don't have a clue! 😞

If it is .rcu, it is a cursor, not an icon. You can open it in the editor and then save it as .cur or .ani, but You'll lose the layers, so keep a backup .rcu.

But all cursors are OS cross compatible, right? I'm thinking, "Can I use Windows Vista cursors on a Windows XP computer?"

Can the Polyline be turned off so as to draw sharp, simple lines as the MS Paint default line tool does? A line that jumps and swings around every time I move the mouse is greatly discouraging.

You can draw standalone lines if you press-move-release the mouse button every time. If you want single clicks, you need to press Enter after each line or a down-right mouse gesture.
